JULIA CHENG,  CREATIVE DIRECTOR 

Luton-London based Julia Cheng is a creative director with extensive expertise in dance and self-produced work, obtaining an impressive portfolio of commissioned works and funded projects.

 

A versatile performer and choreographer, in 2014 she founded House of Absolute, an all-female collective of multidisciplinary dancers. Her technique continues to evolve because she seeks to break boundaries in any given style, she is continually creating new works whilst teaching and mentoring dance across UK, Europe, Africa and Asia. Her influences have led to cross-collaborative works with artists in contemporary dance, music, painting, visual art and poetry.

 

Julia has considerable stage and theatre commissions including works for London Jazz Festival, Roundhouse, Sadlers Wells Theatre, V&A Museum, Southbank Centre, Birmingham Hippodrome, Contour London Symphony Orchestra, British Council Cairo, Wilderness Festival, China Changing Festival, Jazz Refreshed, Love Supreme Festival, University of Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, East London and many more.

 

Having judged, won and competed in many Hip Hop battles since 2007, most recently, Julia participated as a judge/mentor for BBC Young Dancer 2019. She was also a runner-up recipient of the Arts Foundation Futures Award 2019 for Hip Hop Dance. Her prolific reputation has led to campaigns with Dr Martens, Vogue Italia, Wella, Kowtow New Zealand and BBC World Service Persia.

FFION CAMPBELL-DAVIES

 

Born in Cardiff, Wales in 1991, of mixed ethnicity Welsh Grenadian. Ffion is a performance artist that explores themes and subjects around psychoanalysis, gender politics and spirituality. She is interested in the contexts of race, culture and identity, looking at experimental devices and the influence of ritual.

 

Graduating from London School of Contemporary Dance in 2013, she then travelled to Brazil and Cuba to study Afro Brazilian, Afro-Cuban dance, Orixa’s and Candomble ritual influences and more recently has extended her training as a performance martial artist in Indonesian Pencak Silat for the past 2 years.

 

She is a founding member of House of Absolute since 2015 and has been an active dancer within the UK Hip Hop scene, winning numerous events eg: Krump vs Waacking, BLOC Battles, Break Mission Waacking.

 

An exceptional multi-disciplinary practitioner, Ffion is also a multi-instrumentalist, music producer and singer with experience in backing vocals, percussion, collaborative performances and production assistance. This has led her to work with a diverse range of artists including Dam Van Hyunh for DEP,  Paleta CalmQuality for Roxanne Tataei and Chris Reyes Caravan as part of Vault Festival utilising her additional skills in acting and spoken word. Current 2019 projects include collaborations with director Kyoung Shin-kim and Frankie Johnson in Seoul, South Korea.

 

Ffion’s choreographic works The Footsteps Of Many, Shoreditch Town Hall for IDENTITY, Boundless, Theatre Deli for HIVE in 2018, and audience choice prize-winning Womb Paves Way, Richmix for Starting Point Festival 2019 showcase her remarkable self-produced musical scores and impressive costume design.

LULA MEBRAHTU

Lula Mebrahtu aka: lula.xyz is a creative enigma. Sub-Saharan Habesha by way of London, carving out a career as a multidisciplinary artist with creative approaches that have led her to garner support and success across multiple fields.

 

She is an unconventional thinker with technology as her enabler, MiMu gloves, lula.xyz is breaking through ‘the norm’ and liberating artistic expression for a sensory experience. At the forefront of vanguard, alongside an upcoming EP From My Hands To Your Ears, lula.xyz is developing an immersive live performance within an audio-visual installation that takes you on a journey of migration.

 

Using her voice to liberate truth and facilitate transcendence, lula.xyz sings about a lived experience of the past, present and future. Her soulful timbre, which carries the weight of her heritage, enables intergalactic travel; with the support of cutting edge technology MiMu Gloves, she makes levitation through sound waves possible.

 

Following her completion of a degree in Psychology, she received a Dance and Drama award to study Musical Theatre Diploma. As an experienced host, she has presented for BBC, Afropunk, Love Supreme Festival, London Jazz Festival and Ronnie Scotts. A multi-talented artist, lula.xyz is continually transforming her skills and evolving her creative output platforming her works for TEDx, WOW Festival, Hello Culture, Music Tech Fest Stockholm, Apple Store to name a few.

DIVA-J

Diva-J is an accomplished dancer in both disciplines of classical training and street dance since the age of 3. She has won numerous competitions, such as SDK Locking UK Qualifier, Funkin' Stylez Locking UK Qualifier, UK Hip Hop Championships and other underground battles, where she qualified to represent the UK in Europe and the USA.  

 

She has also performed at Breakin’ Convention, the Chinese New Year Celebration in Trafalgar Square and on the O2 Arena stage participating in the World Skills 2012 opening; she has also featured in the film All Stars and was casted for a principal role for the UAE Pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.  

 

In terms of classical achievements, Diva-J has now completed her classical training with qualifications in Advanced 2 RAD Ballet, Advanced 2 ISTD Modern and Tap, and Gold level ISTD Jazz.

FAYE READER

 

Faye is an artist exploring the connections between different mediums of art ; dance movement, painting, drawing, writing, singing, photography and videography.

 

For over 10 years she has studied and specialises in Popping, Waving and Animation as she evolved and honed her skills on the underground dance scene in London, connecting and expanding her technique and freestyle in battles and cyphers in the clubs. Faye acquired a deeper understanding of the Popping technique by travelling across the world to battle and learn from the pioneers of this style during her time as a member of Fiya House.

 

Following this she discovered her next calling and love for Waacking with House of Absolute and has developped a unique style of her own fusing elements of Waacking with her passion for Popping and Animation.

 

She has an extensive record of performance credits including DJ Redlight tour, Festival of Speed, Malta’s 40 Year Republic Celebrations for Cirque Bijou, Warrior Queens, Breakin’ Convention, Move it! Resolution! , Love Supreme Festival, Contour London Symphony Orchestra, University of Hertfordshire.  

SERENA WILLIAMS

Serena Williams is a dancer, choreographer and DJ based in Luton and London. She specialises in Hip Hop choreography, having trained and performed with Boy Blue Entertainment. Her work is inspired by street dance styles and contemporary dance theatre.

 

Since 2008 she has created award winning work in London schools based in deprived areas which has seen her win 12 dance competitions both regionally and nationally, placing top 3 12 times. Her team recently won the Barnet Partnership school sport Primary Team of the Year 2018 for achievements in dance. They have performed on professional stages across England and fundraise for transport, costumes and charities.

 

Performances include Breakin’ Convention, Project Dance, New York, Love Box Festival and her commercial work includes Sky 1 as Flash Mob Dance captain, X Factor for David Guetta and Emeli Sandé  and The Jonathan Ross Show for Rita Ora. Serena was part of a team of 15 professional dancers that taught 1,400 volunteers for the London 2012 Olympic opening ceremony, dancing alongside Dizzy Rascal. She has DJ’d for weddings, parties and dance battles: Floorgasm, Get Hype: Circle Burnerz UK and The One Battle.

SASKIA HORTON

Saskia Horton is a multidisciplinary artist. Trained in a variety of styles from Contemporary to Krump to Waacking, she combines these to form her own unique movement quality. She begun her choreographic journey co-creating pieces such as Dedicated to Dizzy, Stardust and her own version of Orlando Warrior for House of Absolute and is currently developing her own work Life According to Motown , commissioned by The Place.

 

Also an astoundingly accomplished musician, having completed a BA Honours Degree in Jazz, she has played violin for 14 years, 10 years of which in classically trained. She composes music and manages her band Nihilism who are currently working on their debut album and have just released their debut EP. Nihilism have played at prestigious venues such as Royal Festival Hall, Ronnie Scotts and the London Jazz Festival. Saskia also plays in electro-soul band Sawamanga as well as the roaring 12-piece avant-garde Levitation Orchestra.

MÉLISSA LIANDOUZI

 

Méli is born and bred in France. Passionate about all types of dance, she trained in Ballet at the age of 6. In 1999, she started training, performing and teaching Hip Hop with Tania Coleman and a group of friends in the South of France.

 

In 2003, she went to train in Paris, where she met Edouard Lavelle who took her under his wings and joined the Dirty South Crew. In 2005, she became President of the Association Femmes de Tout Horizon, aiming to build a strong group of women to offer a better life for their children through dance, activities and trips, financial and psychological support. Since then, she has travelled aboard and acquired knowledge from international teachers. She has been travelling back and forth from France to London since 2008 for her studies and training and taught at City Academy London, Islington in 2010. She joined the female Hip Hop Crew, Kuja, in 2014. Performing and choreographing for music videos and corporate events.

 

 Méli has worked with many organisations including: LMFAO party, Boomphones, Byrone, Zodiac Maritime Agency, Eurocopter, Peugeot France, Cercle Basket Underground, The Ritch Kids, K2 Festival, Planète jeunes, Festival d’Avignon...She has spent the last 10 years training intensively in different style of dance namely Hip Hop, House, Hustle and Waacking and is currently training in Salsa and Contemporary.
